The Playknox, a sports consulting, research and communications agency, in association with the Indian Sport Management Association in their latest impact report titled ‘Empowering women through sports’ focused on the achievements of women in sports and tackling barriers to female participation in sport in Uttar Pradesh.

The research provided evidence that parent of female sportspersons generally provide consent to travel for state or national level events if there is a female coach travelling with the team. It was also found that accessibility of gyms and stadium infrastructure play a key role in parents providing support to female sportspersons, but this did not have an impact on their future decision to pursue sports.

This research also found that support from school plays a key role in maintaining a balance between education and sports for female sportspersons. Female sportspersons who reported failure to maintain a balance between education and sports also reported a lack of support from their educational institution to pursue sport. It was also reported that female sportspersons who have been given education regarding menstrual cycles and its effects take part in sport during their menstrual cycles.

Furthermore, the jobs provision by the UP Government positively impacted their decision to pursue sports as they believe a secure future lies ahead of them.

544 women in sports took part in the survey. However, the respondents who were below 18, their data couldn’t be used in the report and was only to get a perspective. The data of 240 women in sport above 18 years of age was collated and a mix of descriptive and inferential statistics has been used to analyze the data. Olympians/Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medalists Sudha Singh, Priyanka Goswami, Vandana Kataria, Annu Rani, Parul Chaudhary, Divya Kakran, Mumtaz Khan, Dipti Sharma among others were interviewed.

The report also includes insights from female executives of two corporate organisations which are investing in Uttar Pradesh through their CSR namely HCL Foundation and Capri Global. A full copy of the report can be found here.
